Hello readers, I'm writing this blog as part of our task based on thinking activity. So that is as under....
Jude the obscure :-
Jude the Obscure is a novel written by Thomas Hardy, which began as a magazine serial in December 1894 and was first published in book form in 1895. This was the last completed novel of Thomas Hardy.
The basic themes of this novel are like:- class, religion, society, and marriage. We can see the characters in this novel like Jude Fawley, Susanna Bridehead, Arabella Donn, Aunt Drusilla, Richard Phillotson, Little Father Time, etc. Jude is the protagonist of the novel.
Thinking activity on Jude the Obscure :-
Q.1 Do you think that Sue Bridehead is new women?
In this novel the character of sue Bridehead is the central character. She is the first female feminist who has been described in novel. She is intelligent and free spirited. She is the most outspoken in her attack on marriage.she describe marriage as a 'hopelessly vulgar' institution.And observes 'the flower in the bride's hand are sadly like the garland which decked the heifers for sacrifice in old times.
She is stronger and liberal woman. Sue's ability to support herself financially via, her career as a teacher and her opposition to marriage makes her out as a ' new woman '. She is the woman of nineteeth century who has given herself more freedom than she knows how to handle.
Sue is intellectual woman who thinks as well as feels and who is capable of estimating right and wrong by her argument. Her rejection of social norms, her articulation, her ideas and free choice of sexuality make her a 'New Woman'.
Q.2 According to you what is different between Sue Bridehead and Arabella Donn?
In the novel we can see two woman character which are important and connected with Jude who is the protagonist of the novel. Sue Bridehead and Arabella Donn both have different opposition ideas, beliefs and attitude towards life. Let's we know about differences between Arabella Donn and Sue Bridehead:-
★ Sue Bridehead :-
Sue Bridehead is the central character of the novel. She is cousin of Jude. Some characteristic features we can find in Sue's character are like she is intelligent, free-spirited, strong and liberal woman. Sue has modern ideas about the ideal relationship between two people.
She married with Phillotson, twenty year older than her. When sue enters matrimoney, she discovers the difficult situation of woman in marriage. After that she is not happy in her married life and than she live with Jude without marriage.
She not want to any sexual relations. She becomes mother of two child by Jude and Arabella gives her child Little Father Time to sue. Sue Shaw death of his child and she takes it as a punishment of God for her sins and goes back to Phillotson who remarries her.
★ Arabella Donn :-
Arabella Donn is totally different from Sue Bridehead. She is seductive, intelligent but uneducated, manipulative and a born survivor. She does not consider traditions like marriage seriously. Marriage matters only for the financial security it provides.
Arabella believed that a woman cannot survive on her own because she needs a husband to take that responsibility. Her child by Jude, Little Father Time is regarded as a nuisance, she gave him to Jude and Sue.
She displays no maternal tenderness or affection towards the child. When she becomes a widow after her second pursuit Jude. She has not changed at all. And she succeeds in finding a husband after the death of the previous.
At the end we can find some differences between both of them like their attitude towards marriage, motherhood, religion and education.
Q.3 Did we can find any difference between Indian marriage system and Victorian marriage system?
India is the cultural country. India follows the rules and regulations of society, customs, religion,etc. Victorian age is the time in which reign of queen Victoria. It's tell about the Britain.
★ Indian marriage system :-
In ancient time we can see child marriage and dowry system in India. But nowadays that things are not happen. Arranged marriages are comment in Indian society from vedic Era and still it is viewed in maximum Indian family. Parents play an important role for their childs marriage. They want to choose perfect bride or groom for their son or daughter.
Indian society believes marriage as a holly things. They follow the customs and rules of marriage. Now in the modern time we can see the changes in marriage. There are no child marriage occures.
Some peoples are not considered arrange marriage. According to them marriage is a system of completions of a girl's and boy's mind feelings to each other. They provide value of value of love marriage and offer freedom to their child ti choose their life partner.
★ Victorain marriage system :-
Marriage was at the center of everyday lives for the victorians and its influence extended to all corners of life and was the basis on which victorian society was established. In the victorian society was established.
In the victorian era there were rules to follow about marriage. There was a " marriage season " where many relationships had been put in place with a plan to the future in which was beginning a serious journey with marriage being the ultimate goal.
Until 1823 the legal age in England for marriage was 21 years for men and women although after 1823 a male coupe marry as young as 14 without parental consent and a girl at 12. Marriage was also only between one class so they couldn't mary down at class or upper class.
In the upper class marriages, the wife often brought a generous Dowry and enticement for the marriage. Their marriage done in the steps, courtship, engagement and wedding.
Q.4 Make a comparision between this two character on the ground of new woman concept.

Bathsaheba Everdene
Hardy put female characters in his novel. The touchsone of a novelist's power is his handling of his female characters and Hardy is a specialist in the field. Tess, Eustacia Vye, Bathsheba, Grace, Elfride, Sue, etc., are only a few of the portraits in the wonderfull art-gallery of Thomas Hardy. We find some similarity between Sue and Bathsaheba. They both are independent and intellectual women.
★ Sue Bridehead :-
Sue Bridehead is intellectual and independent women. She able to take her own decision. She is different from other women. She is also nineteeth century woman who has given herself more freedom than she knows how to handle. She married with 20 year older than her.
She wants to blieve that he is free to establish a new sort of relationship to men, even as she demands freedom to examine new ideas. In the same novel a character of Arabella Donne, is different from Sue.
At the end of novel Sue finds herself in the role of sinner performing penance for her misconduct. But her self libety an intellectuality made her new woman.
★ Bathsaheba Everdene :-
Bathsaheba Everdene is the character of Hardy's novel Far From the Madding Crowd. At the beginning of the novel, Bathsaheba is a woman filled with vanity and pride. She often looks at herself in the mirror and admires what she sees.
She turns down Gobriel's proposal, for she feels he is beneath her. She is incensed that Boldwood does not pay her attention and manipulates him into loving her. At the end of novel she married with Gabriel Oak.
In every time Gabriel Oak protect her in every way. And at the end Bathsaheba is a mature woman free from vanity and pride. She can manage her three marriage with different person. Her impulsive nature lead her to marry with Troy and Bolwood.
In this way the both woman characters have their own beliefs about marriage. And they both are independent shown by Hardy to us.
Q.5 watch this given video and share your views on it. At what extent you are agree or disagree. Why?
Ipc section 497 was an act on adultry. In 2018 supreme court gave judgement on this law . And this law become unconstitutional. Supreme court said that adultry is not a criminal offence.
I'm not agree with this judgement. Because India is a cultural country. It believes marriage as holly relation. If adultry is not remain a crime, it spoils India's culture, married life and children's future. It affected to holly married life. Adultry is totally against of India's culture and it's customs.
